Long stretches of extremely high temperatures with little or no precipitation can result in damage to our homes' foundations. The problem is the soil under the foundation, which acts like a sponge. As it absorbs water, it swells. When it loses water, it shrinks. And as the soil under a house swells and shrinks, the foundation shifts. If the soil shrinks too much, you could end up with some major damage.

BBB warns consumers not to be taken in by a deceptive extended vehicle warranty marketing campaign that is sweeping the country. Victims bombarded by an endless stream of postcards, emails, letters and calls to home and mobile phones allege receiving such calls even when they are listed on the Do Not Call Registry, a clear violation of federal law. The Federal Trade Commission also says It is against the law for telemarketers to contact folks on their mobile phones.

Everyone with an email box experiences spam. Those junk messages offering porn, prescription drugs and the latest get-rich-quick schemes have plagued people for years. Now spam is blowing up mobile phones via text messages, and some of them are attempting to steal sensitive personal information.

Some businesses are seeing an opportunity to make money by selling fuel boosting additives or offering engine modifications to help drivers conserve fuel. BBB is advising consumers to stay away from gas saving products, parts and modifications that sound too-good-to-be-true and is offering advice on more reliable ways to conserve fuel.

Internet thieves are now using escrow service fronts with some new twists to steal money and personal identities. The scope and cost of Internet fraud is stunning. For 2007, the Internet Crime Complaint Center processed 219,553 complaints, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that nearly $526 million was lost via Internet fraud. FTC also reports that 28 percent of online fraud victims sent funds to scammers via hard to track wire transfer services, a favorite tactic of fake escrow services.

Texas has laws prohibiting payday lenders from charging high interest rates. It just doesn't look that way. Companies that provide short-term loans at high interest rates use out-of-state lending partners to get around Texas' usury laws.
