BBB Offers Dispute Resolution Services as Texas Residential Construction Commission Expires

BBB Steps Up to Address “Sunsetted” Agency’s Dispute Resolution Program

Austin, TX – The Texas legislature’s decision earlier this month to “sunset” the Texas Residential Construction Commission, or TRCC, means the agency is no longer handling complaints or requests for inspections on residential construction. This leaves some consumers and builders concerned about how disputes will be resolved in the future.  Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas’ dispute resolution service are available to serve the needs of consumers and businesses formerly with the TRCC.

“BBB is prepared to work with consumers and businesses that used to rely on the TRCC to resolve disputes,” said Carrie A. Hurt, President and CEO of BBB serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas. “BBB’s Dispute Resolution services are an alternative to going to court - they are informal and user-friendly.  Our BBB’s Dispute Resolution Team has successfully assisted businesses and consumers in resolving 87% of all disputes received this year.”

BBB encourages consumers and homeowners to utilize BBB’s free services, such as eQuote and BBB Member Pages, to find trustworthy construction and remodeling businesses in the area.

About BBB Dispute Resolution

BBB provides three basic avenues for dispute resolution:  conciliation, mediation and arbitration.  In conciliation, BBB collects information from both parties, encourages open communication and facilitates correspondence leading to a resolution.

In mediation, BBB provides a professionally trained mediator to talk with the parties and guide them in working out their own mutually-agreeable solutions.

If conciliation and/or mediation efforts are not successful, arbitration may be the next step. The parties state their views at an arbitration hearing, offer evidence and let an impartial arbitrator make a decision that ends the dispute.

BBB will advise consumers and businesses of the appropriate steps to resolve the particular concern. For additional information on how dispute resolution works, review: Dispute Resolution, The Commonsense Alternative.
