Why Shredding and Recycling Is Important!

Last year, 10 million Americans became victims of ID theft, resulting in the loss of $45 billion, according to a 2008 report from Javelin Strategy and Research. Over half of ID theft occurs through direct contact with the victim's personal information, through a stolen or lost wallet, rifling through a personal mailbox or trashcan, or even lifting documents from inside a home or business.

"This is largely a crime of access," adds Hurt. "Our goal here is to make personal information less accessible and encourage consumers to get in the habit of recycling."

According to Keep America Beautiful, only 57 percent of all paper consumed in the United States was recovered for recycling last year. For this important community service initiative, BBB is partnering nationally with members of the National Association of Information Destruction (NAID), the industry's trade organization. Secure shredding services will be free and BBB will distribute advice and resources for protecting personal information from ID thieves as well as a bill retention schedule.
