BBB Shreds and Recycles 140,000 Pounds of Paper

Over 2,500 Cars Visit Free BBB Shred Day Events

Austin, TX - May 9, 2011 –
Local BBB Shred Day events last month resulted in participants shredding a total of 140,000 pounds (70 tons) of financial records, business forms and other confidential documents. To keep sensitive identification information away from the hands of identity thieves, a total of 2,544 cars visited shredding events held in Round Rock, Corpus Christi, Midland and San Antonio, Texas. In addition, over 5,000 pounds of electronics and 1,100 pounds of cardboard were collected and recycled by Goodwill at the events.

To illustrate the impact that Shred Day attendees had on their local communities, the amount of material shredded and recycled is saving the equivalent of the following items:

·         1,186 trees

·         140 barrels of oil

·         488,250 gallons of water (enough for 324 homes for 1 month)

·         285,975 kilowatt hours of electricity (enough to power 299 homes for 1 month)

Your BBB’s Shred Day was one of 53 Shred Day events held nationwide last month. Over 12,000 consumers participated and shredded over 450 tons of sensitive documents.

"Shred Day is a proactive way for BBB to help the community combat identity theft and recycle at the same time," said Carrie A. Hurt, BBB President and CEO. "The response we received was overwhelming and we are proud of the positive environmental and financial impact these successful events had on our local economies."

Dell, Goodwill, Financial Fitness of Greater Austin, the Corpus Christi Police Department, Austin American Statesman, and media partners KIII-TV, WOAI-TV and KXAN-TV served as local sponsors for the events. BBB partnered with Cintas Document Management, Lonestar Shredding and Document Storage and Shred-It San Antonio to provide the free shredding and recycling services.
