Better Business Bureau announces Laws of Life winners

Essay contest for 5th through 8th grade students rewards reflection on core values

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Apr. 25, 2012 – Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin’s first annual San Antonio regional Laws of Life Essay Contest concluded last night. Local fifth-through eighth-grade students were encouraged to write from the heart and express the core values, or laws of life, by which they live.

Out of 390 entries received, 13 finalists, their families and teachers were invited to attend a special ceremony where the following regional winners were awarded a cash prize and certificate from San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro:

First Place:
Brooke Casey – KIPP Aspire Academy – Fifth grade
Danielle Penet – Krueger Middle School – Eighth grade

Second Place:
Alejandro Ramirez – KIPP Aspire Academy – Fifth grade

Third Place:
Sarah Gokelman – Krueger Middle School – Eighth grade

Fourth Place:
Amethyst Brookbank – School of Science and Technology – Eighth grade

“We are very proud of these students for taking the opportunity to write about the positive values that build outstanding character,” said Carrie A. Hurt, BBB president and CEO. “We hope the time they took to reflect on their own laws of life has an impact on their academic and personal lives moving forward.”

Participating schools ran local contests for their students and winners were submitted to the BBB Education Foundation for judging in the regional contest. Laws of Life essays were then judged by a panel of professionals from the military, business and academic communities. Americus Diamond, Star Furniture and the John Templeton Foundation sponsored the event.

Schools interested in participating in next year’s Laws of Life Essay Contest should contact Dean Taylor, BBB Education Director, at 210.828.8752 or dtaylor@sanantonio.bbb.org.
