Better Business Bureau warns that college-age adults are particularly vulnerable to identity theft and related fraudulent crimes. According to the Consumer Sentinel Network database, 56,689 consumers between the ages of 20 and 29 fell victim to identity theft in 2011. That number accounts for 23 percent of the total number of identity theft complaints reported last year; the largest out of any 10-year age range.

In the latest Consumer Sentinel Network report issued by the Federal Trade Commission, Texas ranks fifth in the nation for the most reported cases of identity theft per 100,000 residents. Out of 384 metropolitan areas nationwide, cities in Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin were ranked as follows:

Third party vendors are collecting billions of dollars in erroneous charges placed on mobile and landline phone bills and consumers are getting little help from their telephone service providers with removing and preventing such charges, according to a report released July 12 by the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation.

Often consumers are in the habit of always using either card for specific purchases, but because a debit card creates a direct link to a bank account, there are times where it may not be wise to use one.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s Consumer Sentinel Network (CSN), Texas has the fifth highest rate for reported identity theft complaints in the nation. CSN’s 2010 report compiled nationwide complaint data from BBB as well as from the FTC, Internet Crime Complaint Center and other consumer advocacy organizations.

During NCPW, BBB shares tips that help consumers protect their privacy, manage money and debt, avoid identity theft and prevent scams and fraud.

According to The College Board, $94 billion were made available to help college students cover education costs during the 2009-2010 school year. To assist the millions of students and parents who depend on annual grants and scholarships, many companies now sell information about financial aid availability and offer application services. BBB warns that in 2010 nearly 400 complaints were received nationwide from parents and students who were dissatisfied with services provided by scholarship and financial aid companies.
