Standing outside his house on a cold night last year, Austin resident Carlos Marquez did not feel like he was in any position to argue with the locksmith who had come out to help him get the broken key out of his lock. Marquez’s family was trying to stay warm in the car, and he had been quoted a reasonable price, $39, on the phone.

BBB warns consumers of phony callers claiming to be from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Scammers are calling Texas citizens demanding immediate payment on a red-light safety camera ticket, or risk an arrest warrant being issued.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood yesterday announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and Better Business Bureau will collaborate to educate consumers and businesses about the dangers of distracted driving.

For-profit colleges currently enroll 1.8 million students according to the US Department of Education. These schools are privately owned or owned by a publicly traded company and their earnings can benefit individuals or shareholders. While for-profit schools are becoming a more popular option for students, a recent investigation by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that some are misleading students about the cost and quality of the education they will receive.

Most of the time, consumers can be sure that an unsolicited letter from an unknown source asking for personal information is a scam. We like that consumers turn to BBB for advice when they receive one

Last week, Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced the State of Texas will use approximately $23 million in federal stimulus funds for a mail-in rebate program benefiting consumers who purchase qualifying energy efficient household appliances. The Texas “Cash for Appliances” program is set to run from April 16 to April 25, 2010. Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas advises consumers to plan ahead and research rebate availability before making major purchases.

Following the Justice Department’s first settlement under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) last month, BBB reminds service men and women in Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas of certain protections in the event they are called for active duty or deployment. The SCRA is intended to postpone or suspend some civil obligations to enable service members to devote full attention to duty and relieve stress on their family members.
