September is National Preparedness Month; a full month dedicated to educating the public about how to prepare for emergencies, including natural disasters. Better Business Bureau supports this effort and urges families to devise their own emergency preparedness plan.

National Small Business Week is May 20 – 26 and Better Business Bureau is taking this opportunity to celebrate the growing number of small businesses in our country. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, 60 to 80 percent of new jobs are created by the approximately 27.2 million small businesses in the U.S. It is estimated that more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business.

In an effort to increase awareness and educate consumers on their rights, Better Business Bureau and Southwest Movers Association have teamed up for National Moving Month. Every year, both BBB and SMA receive complaints from consumers who have fallen prey to dishonest and, often times, unlicensed moving companies. In the past year, BBB has received 176 complaints against movers with most complaints alleging damaged or lost goods and final prices being in excess of original estimates. And in a too-frequent situation, some rogue operators hold consumers’ belongings “hostage” and require a higher fee than was originally quoted.

Better Business Bureau warns consumers that scammers are making phony phone calls claiming to represent the National Do Not Call Registry. According to DoNotCall.gov, “The calls claim to provide an opportunity to sign up for the Registry. These calls are not coming from the Registry or the Federal Trade Commission, and you should not respond to these calls.

As retailers start gearing up for the holidays, some job hunters could get an early present this year in the form of a seasonal job. According to National Retail Federation, retail sales are expected to increase 2.8 percent this holiday season. As many retailers will be looking to add to their employee roster, Better Business Bureau recommends applicants apply early, research potential employers and come prepared for the interview.

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s Consumer Sentinel Network (CSN), Texas has the fifth highest rate for reported identity theft complaints in the nation. CSN’s 2010 report compiled nationwide complaint data from BBB as well as from the FTC, Internet Crime Complaint Center and other consumer advocacy organizations.
