Your Better Business Bureau has received close to 50 complaints in the past month against collection agencies and is reminding consumers about their rights.

Threats of arrest, lawsuits and unending harassment seem to fill the playbooks of Central Asset Bureau, a debt collection agency in San Antonio. Better Business Bureau is issuing a warning to consumers after receiving numerous complaints about the company’s debt collection tactics. Most of the consumers allege the debt Central Asset Bureau is attempting to collect is not even valid.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline has risen to $3.43 statewide, up from an average of $3.16 per gallon just one month ago. As prices continue to climb, BBB reports some businesses may be taking the opportunity to make money off consumers by selling “fuel boosting” products and additives to help conserve gas. However, BBB advises consumers to be cautious of “gas-saving” products that sound too good to be true.

BBB is aware of radio spots and other promotions in the area announcing local talent search events and wants consumers to know that not all talent search agencies deliver on the promises of fame and fortune.

BBB warns consumers to beware of phony debt collection callers impersonating Kentucky-based payday loan company, US Cash Advance. Janiece Charlez of Temple, Texas reported to BBB she received a phone call from the alleged company, stating her husband had been turned in for collections.

BBB has issued an F rating to Auction Agency, an Austin-based company which lists foreclosed homes and automobiles for sale on the Internet. Consumer complaints received by BBB allege Auction Agency represented their service as a free trial, then later assessed charges for unrequested services. Additionally, several disputes allege dissatisfaction with the company’s services.

BBB completed an investigation on over 300 travel companies operating in Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas. One type of travel company garnering complaints locally and nationwide is travel clubs, which require consumers pay up-front fees for access to discounted travel packages. Common concerns involving travel clubs include advertising free gifts that were not free, offering vacation packages that were non-existent and misrepresenting the services provided. BBB has received several complaints from consumers regarding the following F-rated companies:

While the majority of these companies have resolved their disputes, a BBB investigation of over 300 travel companies identified two South Texas businesses who failed to resolve or respond to several consumer complaints.
