Austin-Area Lawn Care Company Ignores Ten Recent Complaints

BBB has issued an F rating to Central Texas Lawn Care for failing to answer consumer disputes. The Pflugerville-based company offers tree trimming, pest control and other lawn maintenance services to Austin-area residents. Ten consumers have filed complaints against this company in the past year.

Victims of Fraudulent Discount Health Card Plans to Receive Refunds

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott recently announced a resolution to the state’s enforcement action against Austin-based Affordable Healthcare Options and its other entities AHCO Direct, LLC, AHCO Contract Servicing, Ltd., Maternity Card, Brian James McDonald and Aaron Christopher Bouren. According to AG filings, the company and their additional business names sold fraudulent discount health card plans to expectant women who lacked maternity insurance. Consumers who filed, or plan to file, a complaint with the Attorney General’s office may be eligible to receive refunds.

Complaints from Senior Citizens Increase in 2010

Fraud targeting senior citizens and their caregivers is a growing concern as thousands have fallen victim to scammers. As of August 1, 2010, BBB serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas reports an 11 percent increase in complaints from seniors compared to 2009.

Local Bedding Manufacturer Operating Without a License, Recruiting Unauthorized Distributors

BBB cautions consumers that local furniture and bedding retailer, EB Enterprises, has been operating without a required competency license from the Texas Department of State Health Services. Additionally, respondents to franchise opportunities with the company could face scrutiny for selling bedding without proper licensing. According to Texas Administrative Code, a person “may not manufacture, import, wholesale, distribute, or engage in the business of renovating or selling bedding in this state or for delivery in this state unless the person first obtains a permit for that specific purpose from the department.”

While most of the health care reforms signed into law earlier this year won't take effect for another four years, small businesses can look forward to an immediate health care tax credit designed to offset insurance premiums. Reports to BBB state sales representatives use high pressure sales tactics, claiming the policies have a limited enrollment period and asking consumers for personal information.

Scareware Pop-Ups Target Google, New York Times

According to a report by the Anti-Phishing Working Group, scareware attacks, or pop-up ads deceiving consumers into thinking their computer is infected with viruses, are on the rise. Most recently, companies like Google, Twitter and the New York Times are being exploited by hackers as part of a massive scareware attack on consumers. Better Business Bureau is offering advice to consumers on how to protect computers and personal information from the threat of scareware.

FTC - HELP WANTED ... FINDING A JOB

I saw an ad in the newspaper for jobs in corporate finance. I faxed my resume to the 800-number listed and got a call from a woman who said her company works with businesses to find employees to fill their positions. She said the service would cost me $495, but the fee was fully refundable if I was dissatisfied or found a job on my own. She guaranteed me interview opportunities and told me that if I found a job through her company, there was a good chance my new employer would reimburse me for the fee.
