Consumer savvy, smart shopping and common sense all had a great year, according to Better Business Bureau. Consumers asked BBB for help more than 103 million times in 2011, up from 87 million in 2010 and the highest rate in the organization’s 100-year history. Conversely, filings of formal complaints against businesses were down across the U.S. and Canada; 927,000 in 2011 compared to just over one million in 2010.

Victims of the historic Central Texas fires spent days camped out in shelters, waiting. Now they are returning to the ashes and starting to rebuild. Better Business Bureau advises those residents to take measures to prevent unscrupulous businesses and scammers from victimizing them a second time.

BBB has issued an F rating to Majestic Fences and Decks, a Belton, Texas-based fence and deck contracting company, for failure to respond to consumer disputes. Over the past four months, BBB has received five complaints from Central Texas consumers alleging they paid the company hundreds or thousands of dollars in advance deposits for incomplete work and poor workmanship. Consumers further allege that repeated attempts to contact the company regarding the status of work and requests for refunds have not been answered.

BBB serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas has issued an F rating to Sweetwater Contractors, a local general contracting company. Disputes received by BBB allege consumers paid up to $3,300 in upfront fees for materials which were never delivered and that the company repeatedly failed to show to complete work. Consumers further allege Sweetwater Contractors is unreachable or unresponsive to attempts to address their concerns.

BBB has issued an “F” rating on Austin water purification and pool company, Water Workz, due to allegations from consumers that, despite all costs having been paid in advance, the company failed to complete construction or repairs on their pools and/or water purification systems. Consumers complain the company failed to provide promised copies of their contracts or warranties and, despite repeated attempts to contact the company, contracted and warranty-related work was not addressed promptly. Several consumers report incomplete work valuing tens of thousands of dollars.
