Local community invited to BBB’s 9th bi-annual Shred Day event

Better Business Bureau invites area consumers and businesses to participate in its bi-annual Shred Day events Saturday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct. 27. Shred Day is an opportunity for local consumers and businesses to prevent identity theft and help the environment through free on-site document shredding, as well as paper, cell phone and computer recycling. BBB Shred Day events will be held in the following cities:

BBB and SMA Warn of Unscrupulous Movers During National Moving Month

In an effort to increase awareness and educate consumers on their rights, Better Business Bureau and Southwest Movers Association have teamed up for National Moving Month. Every year, both BBB and SMA receive complaints from consumers who have fallen prey to dishonest and, often times, unlicensed moving companies. In the past year, BBB has received 176 complaints against movers with most complaints alleging damaged or lost goods and final prices being in excess of original estimates. And in a too-frequent situation, some rogue operators hold consumers’ belongings “hostage” and require a higher fee than was originally quoted.

A new email phishing scam hit Better Business Bureau and consumers across the country this week. The fake emails appear to be from StubHub — a website that allows users to buy and sell tickets to sporting and entertainment events — and use the site’s name to trick victims into providing personal information.

Senate Committee Condemns Third-Party Billing Practices

BBB Shreds and Recycles 140,000 Pounds of Paper

Local BBB Shred Day events last month resulted in participants shredding a total of 140,000 pounds (70 tons) of financial records, business forms and other confidential documents. To keep sensitive identification information away from the hands of identity thieves, a total of 2,544 cars visited shredding events held in Round Rock, Corpus Christi, Midland and San Antonio, Texas. In addition, over 5,000 pounds of electronics and 1,100 pounds of cardboard were collected and recycled by Goodwill at the events.

BBB Warns Consumers to Check Credit Annually

With the imminent turn of the New Year, BBB reminds consumers to take the time to review their overall financial health by requesting a free credit report. An annual review of a credit report is essential to verify all outstanding debts and helpful in maintaining a strong protection against identity theft. Supporting the value of reviewing credit reports annually, the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act was enacted by the US Federal Government in 2003. This act entitles consumers to receive a free copy of their credit report every year, from each of the 3 nationwide consumer credit reporting companies.

BBB Tips to Avoid Debit and Credit Card Skimming

BBB reports that debit and credit card skimmers steal nearly $1 billion annually from unsuspecting consumers, according to Bankrate.com. Alarmingly, Javelin Strategy & Research experts estimate that one in five people have fallen victim. Skimming occurs when a consumer’s credit or debit card information is stolen as it is swiped at an ATM or card swipe machine.
