Short-term home rentals are soaring in popularity amongst homeowners and out-of-towners. As the Austin City Limits festival approaches, Formula 1 revs up and with the holidays right around the corner, many homeowners may choose to offer their home as a short-term rental. Better Business Bureau reminds homeowners to be properly prepared and protected if they choose to rent to strangers.

In the past 12 months, Better Business Bureau has received close to 200 complaints nationally from consumers who have been scammed in some way after responding to a classified on Craigslist. BBB warns consumers to be cautious when responding to a classified posted on Craigslist, especially a job or home rental posting.

Within seconds of searching the Internet, potential home renters can find all the information they need about a possible new home, such as pictures, prices and virtual tours. However, such tools give scammers the perfect opportunity to take advantage of consumers. Better Business Bureau warns renters to be on the lookout for phony ads on Craigslist and other Internet services aimed at stealing money.

Forty-two percent of Americans plan to travel for the holidays this year according to a survey conducted by the world’s largest travel site, TripAdvisor. Based on recent survey results, TripAdvisor projects that among those traveling between the Christmas and New Year holidays this year, 22 percent will spend more than $2,000 on their travel expenses alone. In 2009, AAA estimated that 87.7 million Americans traveled more than 50 miles over the holidays.

With the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver less than a month away, Better Business Bureau warns consumers to look out for scams when searching for tickets and housing accommodations for the games. According to the Association for Computing Machinery, ticket scams accounted for more fraud on eBay than any other merchandise category in 2008.

If you're a landlord, you may use consumer reports to evaluate rental applications - as long as you follow the provisions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The FCRA is designed to protect the privacy of consumer report information and to guarantee that the information supplied by consumer reporting agencies (CRAs) is as accurate as possible. The FCRA requires landlords who deny a lease based on information in the applicant's consumer report to provide the applicant with an "adverse action notice."
