Better Business Bureau invites area consumers and businesses to participate in its bi-annual Shred Day events Saturday, Oct. 20 and Saturday, Oct. 27. Shred Day is an opportunity for local consumers and businesses to prevent identity theft and help the environment through free on-site document shredding, as well as paper, cell phone and computer recycling. BBB Shred Day events will be held in the following cities:

A recent study published by Carnegie Mellon University Cylab, a cybersecurity research center, found that children were targeted by identity thieves 51 times more frequently than adults. Better Business Bureau encourages parents to regularly monitor their children’s credit report to prevent devastating damage to their future.

Better Business Bureau warns that college-age adults are particularly vulnerable to identity theft and related fraudulent crimes. According to the Consumer Sentinel Network database, 56,689 consumers between the ages of 20 and 29 fell victim to identity theft in 2011. That number accounts for 23 percent of the total number of identity theft complaints reported last year; the largest out of any 10-year age range.

Better Business Bureau Shred Day events resulted in 116,368 pounds of consumers’ confidential documents, computer parts and cardboard shredded and recycled. In addition, 10 boxes of old cell phones were recycled. Nearly 100,000 pounds of paper documents were safely disposed of by certified document destruction specialists in the following locations throughout Central Texas:

In the latest Consumer Sentinel Network report issued by the Federal Trade Commission, Texas ranks fifth in the nation for the most reported cases of identity theft per 100,000 residents. Child identity theft is a growing crime that damages the pristine credit reports of children. Scammers use inactive Social Security numbers they find online – most of which are assigned to children under the age of 18 who have not started using them yet – and sell them to help people establish fake credit.
